Just a reminder we’ll be meeting Thursday, November 10th at 6pm in the English Room of the Kansas Union. KU Law School will be here talking with us about their program, clinics, and about law school admissions at their school and in general across the country. They’ll be bringing a Q&A panel of current law students to answer any and all questions you may have so be sure to take advantage of this great opportunity. They’ll be bringing free pizza as well!

Event tomorrow at the Dole Institute of Politics!

On Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. our 2011 Dole Institute of Politics Fall Fellow Susan Bryant is hosting special guest Jan Baran. They will be discussing the intriguing nature of campaign finance law, how it has evolved and the impact it has had on modern political campaigns.

Susan Bryant currently serves as chair of the Wake County, North Carolina (Raleigh and its suburbs) Republican Party. She has had a long and illustrious career in public service, working as a consultant, campaign manager, Congressional chief of staff, political director for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and Director of Communications of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Her Study Group series is entitled “A Run for the White House,” and she is focusing on Presidential campaigns in the context of the current 2012 race.

Her guest next Wednesday will be Jan Baran. Jan is a senior partner in the D.C. law firm Wiley Rein LLP. He has been called “the dean of campaign finance” and “one of the best election lawyers in the U.S.” by Chambers USA. Mr. Baran has argued four cases before the Supreme Court of the United States. He also was General Counsel of the 1988 Bush for President campaign and served four years as General Counsel of the Republican National Committee.

Steve Moss, a public defender from Kansas City, MO, will be here to speak with us about his job and answer any questions you have about the profession in general. It will be a great opportunity to network so you won’t want to miss it!

Just a reminder Washburn Law School will be here to speak with us about their law program as well as answer any and all questions you may have about their school, or admissions questions in general ranging from the LSAT, to letters of recommendation, and everything in between!

Hey everyone!

Our first initiation will be this Thursday, September 29th at 6pm in the English Room of the Kansas Union! Even if you’re not being initiated this time around, you’re more than welcome to come watch the ceremony! It would be a great way to prepare if you want to be initiated in December!

Also, the PAD tshirt order deadline is THIS THURSDAY at MIDNIGHT so make sure to order yours ASAP! Here’s the link:

We have another meeting this Thursday, September 22nd at 5pm (not 6!) in the Parlors ABC room on the 5th floor of the Kansas Union. UMKC Law School will be here with an admissions representative and they will be discussing their program, answering any general questions about law school applications and giving you some info on a great summer law program they offer that includes both a class and a hands-on internship. You won’t want to miss it!

** Also, for those of you wanting to get initiated, dues and membership apps are due during this meeting! As well as applications for the PR/Secretary position! (Check your email for more details or email padukans@yahoo.com with any questions you may have!)

1. We have an Executive officer position open, Secretary/Public Relations, so if any of you are interested be sure to check your emails because we will be sending out the application today and they are due by September 22nd, either to the PAD email (padukans@yahoo.com) or you can turn them in that night at our meeting! Let us know if you have any questions. Everyone from freshmen through juniors are welcome to apply!

2. For those of you getting ready to take the LSAT within the next year, we have a fee waiver for a FREE Kaplan LSAT prep course to give away and we will be sending that application out in an email as well today. Everyone is welcome to apply and your application is due September 29th, either by email or at our meeting that night.

Questions to Ask at a Law School Fair

PRE-LAW DAY 2011

KU Pre-Law Day is tomorrow! Come check out the event – the more people who come and ask questions, the more schools will keep coming back in the future! Plus, you earn PAD points for attending!

Attached is a list of schools attending this year’s event, and a document with questions you might want to ask the admissions representatives you’re visiting.

Other reminders:

This is a come and go event.
Everyone is encouraged to come – freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, grad students, alums.
Try to talk to as many law school reps as you can. You may get some valuable advice from one that you wouldn’t get from another. Plus, possibility of application fee waivers!
Bring a bag if you can. We may not have bags to distribute.
You do not need to dress up, but dress in a way that makes you feel confident. Law school reps expect that you may be returning from class or about to go to class.

We’re getting excited for our next meeting, this Thursday, Sept. 15th at 6pm in 308 McCook room of the Burge Union behind Allen Fieldhouse. We will have a current KU Law School student coming to speak with us to give you all a one-on-one chance to hear about the process of taking the LSAT, applying to law schools, and making the transition from undergrad to law school and what it takes to be successful in law school. You’ll have a chance to ask any questions you have as well. See you all there!
